Company History
For over 25 years, we have focused on the needs of homebuyers and sellers in Newton, Brookline, Wellesley, Needham, Weston and other surrounding areas. The Karp, Liberman & Kern Sotheby’s International Realty that exists today is the result of strong partnerships that have developed over the course of those years. After developing careers independently, in 1986 Marcia Karp Real Estate and Susan Liberman Real Estate merged to form Karp and Liberman Real Estate in Newton Centre, MA. In 2003 Margie Kern joined the firm as a partner.
Three years later, Sotheby’s International Realty Affiliates LLC contacted us with a proposal to become an affiliate. We accepted the offer, knowing that this affiliation would provide us with incredible resources to generate even more exposure for our clients’ properties.
On November 28, 2006, we officially merged with Sotheby’s International Realty Affiliates LLC to form Karp, Liberman & Kern Sotheby’s International Realty, independently owned and operated. In just three short months, we completely gutted, renovated, and moved in to a new office space at 391 Langley Road in Newton Centre.

Sotheby’s International Realty Affiliates LLC Company History
Founded in 1976, the Sotheby’s International Realty network was formed to provide exceptional independent brokerages with a powerful marketing and referral program for luxury listings. It also connects real estate companies such as ours with the most prestigious clientele in the world.
In February 2004, Cendant Corporation (NYSE: CD), the world’s leading real estate brokerage franchisor, entered into a long-term strategic alliance with Sotheby’s International Realty Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: BID; LSE: STBA). The agreement provided for the licensing of the Sotheby’s International Realty name, and the development of a full franchise system by Sotheby’s International Realty Affiliates LLC, a Cendant subsidiary. The agreement also included the acquisition of the company-owned real estate brokerage office by NRT Incorporated, a Cendant subsidiary that owns and operates those offices today as Sotheby’s International Realty Affiliates LLC
Independent brokerages must meet eligibility requirements in order to be granted an affiliation. Upon acceptance, the affiliate is supported with operational, marketing, recruiting, educational and business development resources. Additionally, franchise affiliates also benefit from an association with the 260-year-old Sotheby’s auction house.
